Self Defense Tips:
Distractions Many criminals use distractions to lure you into a conversation to attack you. Sometimes they will ask you for the time or for money. Another tactic is to mumble something to draw you in closer to hear them out. When you stare down down at your watch or dig into your pocket, you are opening opportunity for an attack or to be flanked by an accomplice.
I can't count the number of times I recall reading something like this in campus wide emails in college:
*Last night at 2:00am two suspects approached the victim, one suspect asked him for the time, when the victim looked at his watch the second suspect assaulted him. The suspects then robbed the victim and fled*
One strategy I use when a person of concern approaches me on the street is saying, "sorry man, don't have any." (while raising hands and shrugging my shoulders). It is non-aggressive, shows empathy, and most times ends the conversation regardless of the question.
I advocate helping those who are less financially fortunate. However, it is not a strategically sound or safe idea to pull out your wallet right in front of someone you don't know.
These days, almost everybody has a cell phone or a watch, so there is no reason that a person should not know the time. If this occurs late at night in a desolate area, be prepared, know your options.
